Ref's Rule - June 2026

Published Wed 01 Jul 2026

Thanks Neil Butler!

The Rules of Squash deal with the expected behaviour of players but generally do not deal with parents and spectators.  On my travels around the squash centres I occasionally come across posters relating to tips for parents and spectators, so I thought this would be a good chance just to remind us all how we can support our sport by applying sone of the following tips.

Tips for Spectators

  1. THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK
If your comment is negative then SHOOSH!
  2. BE ENTHUSIASTIC
But don’t scream or shout instructions to players.
  3. CHEER AND ACKNOWLEDGE
Reward effort from both players with applause.
  4. ACCEPT DECISIONS BY OFFICIALS
They are human and can make mistakes.
  5. LET COACHES DO THE COACHING
And remember they are human also.
  6. CODE OF CONDUCT
Understand, uphold and support the Squash WA Code of Conduct.
  7. Always remember
    VOLUNTEERS RUN OUR SPORT.
  8. Before you complain
    HAVE YOU VOLUNTEERED YET?

In the case of Point 4 ask yourself, as player, how many unforced errors you have made against the number of “bad” decisions you consider the referee has made.

Rule of the Month

RULE 3.6 (Part only)

The Referee, whose decision is final:
Must suspend play if the behaviour of any person, other than a player, is offensive or disruptive, until the behaviour has ceased, or until the offending person has left the court area.

Quote for the Month

"Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it”

–Michael Jordan
