Coaches Corner - June 2026

Thanks Paul Kershaw!
“Squids” (Squash + Kids) is a fun, energetic introduction to squash for children aged three to eight, pioneered by Mirrabooka Squash Club. Built around play rather than formal coaching, it helps young children build confidence, coordination and a love of movement from their very first time on court.
A program designed for little feet and big energy
The program is split into three simple groups:
- Mini Squids for ages 3–4, focusing on movement and basic coordination;
- Little Squids for ages 5–6, introducing racquet control and target games; and
- Big Squids for ages 7–8, building towards rallies, simple scoring and basic court awareness.
Fun first, technique second
Success is measured in smiles, effort and confidence. Sessions are short, active and varied, using balloons, bouncy sponge balls, cones and simple games to make every child feel included and capable.
What a session looks like
- Start with safety and movement — court boundaries, racquet safety and a warm-up game.
- Build coordination — throwing, catching, bouncing, balancing and tracking the ball.
- Introduce racquet skills — simple grip, tapping, target hitting and wall strikes.
- Finish with fun — modified games, team relays, praise and a quick wrap-up.
Why it works
Squids Squash gives clubs a simple pathway for introducing very young children to the sport. It is safe, social and easy to adapt, making it ideal for first-time players, families and schools.
For children, the real win is leaving the court smiling and wanting to come back.
For clubs, it is a practical way to grow junior participation by making squash feel welcoming from the very first swing.
If your club wants to grow the next generation of players, Squids Squash is a simple, fun and family-friendly place to start! Feel free to reach out to Mirrabooka for session plans, fun ideas, and more!
