Coaches Corner - July 2026

The results are in, and the 2026 Junior State Team has been selected.  HUGE congratulations to all juniors chosen to represent Western Australia at this year's Australian Junior Championships in Devonport, Tasmania this September.

The first two sessions as a team training together has been very positive.

Unfortunately WA has a shortage of players in certain age groups, in the GU19 we only have one player and we are pretty thin in other age groups.

Fortunately, we are blessed with good numbers and talent in our ‘Youth’ group, which is good for the future.

We are focused on building a positive team culture which is inclusive, and welcomes the support of the greater team and squash community.

Often people who are happy to give their time and effort are not sure how they can help. We are talking to these members and giving them direction to make the most of their skills, expertise, experience and passion.

By reaching out we are giving these people, particularly previous players, the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than just themselves, and give back to the sport.

We have a couple of players who have recently ‘aged out’ and a top current junior who is unable to be a part of the team due to work/study commitments, who have offered to help by playing matches with our older juniors. I am proud to say, we also have a number of our older team members who happily stay behind after their training, to help feeding and playing with the youth squad. Members of the youth group often come to training early and help with the performance and talent squads. Thank you for all you are doing!

The parents have also been amazing; most happy to score, time, set up targets, contribute to team building games, supervise outdoor activities and more.

Our team coaches and manager also stay late or come early to help with the squads they are not paid to supervise.

All in all, you can feel the community growing a very healthy culture. Even though not everything is as we would wish it, the communication lines are open and we are now able to address issues which would normally be hidden and fester, only come to the surface when it becomes a major issue.

It’s also important to note that we are working with young people going through one of the most challenging times in their journey to adulthood. The role of the program is not only to help these young people become elite players, but to become successful and positive members of society, who are always willing to contribute to any endeavour and community they get involved in.

We would like for them to keep playing the “healthiest sport in the world”.
